Back extension benches and Roman chairs

Back extension benches and Roman chairs provide support for exercises targeting the lower back, glutes and hamstrings. Depending on the equipment and exercise, you can focus on different muscles along the back of the body, often called the posterior chain.

Our range includes back extension benches, Roman chairs and glute ham developers (GHDs). These machines complement strength training in home gyms, personal-training studios and professional gyms. Choose a model suited to the exercises you want to perform.

What is a back extension bench?

A back extension bench supports your hips or upper thighs and secures your lower legs while you perform controlled back extensions. The lower back, glutes and hamstrings contribute to the movement, with the emphasis depending on your technique and the machine’s design. Pad adjustment helps you find a position suited to your height.

Roman chair or glute ham developer?

Back extension benches and Roman chairs come in different designs, including angled and horizontal versions. A GHD has a different pad and foot-support arrangement and can offer additional exercises, such as glute-ham raises and, where the model permits, GHD sit-ups. These movements have different strength and control requirements, so check the intended exercises and adjustment options.

A complement to strength training

The muscles of the lower back, glutes and hamstrings contribute to exercises such as deadlifts and squats. Back extension benches and GHDs let you train these areas as part of a broader strength programme. Choose exercises and resistance that match your experience and allow controlled movement.

What should you check when choosing?

Compare frame stability, pad and foot-support adjustment, dimensions and maximum user weight. Check the total load limit as well if you plan to use additional weights. For frequent use in a gym or personal-training studio, choose a model rated for professional use. Leave enough space around the machine for the full movement and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
