Grip accessories for strength training
Grip accessories serve different purposes in strength training. Training chalk and liquid chalk help manage moisture on your hands and can reduce slipping. Thick grips increase the diameter of a barbell or dumbbell handle, making it more demanding to hold.
Choose according to your goal: a drier grip for exercises such as deadlifts, pull-ups and rows, or an additional challenge for your hands and forearms. These accessories do not automatically let you lift heavier weights or perform more repetitions.
Why use grip accessories?
Slipping caused by sweaty hands and limited grip strength are different issues. Chalk can help with moisture, while thick grips deliberately increase the demands on your grip. Match the accessory to the exercise and choose a load you can control throughout the movement.
Training chalk and liquid chalk
Training chalk helps absorb moisture on your hands. Liquid chalk is applied as a liquid and, once dry, leaves a layer of chalk. Either can be useful when holding a barbell, kettlebell or pull-up bar. Follow the product’s application instructions and check your gym’s chalk policy, as permitted types can differ.
Thick grips for bars and dumbbells
Thick grips fit around a handle to increase its diameter. Your hands and forearms must work harder to maintain the hold, adding a grip-training element to suitable exercises. You may need to reduce the weight compared with your usual setup. Check compatibility with the handle diameter and available grip length, and make sure the grips fit securely according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
For strength and functional training
Grip accessories can complement bodybuilding, powerlifting and functional workouts. Compare the type of chalk or the dimensions, material and fit of thick grips rather than treating them as interchangeable aids. Check the intended use, keep contact surfaces in good condition and inspect reusable accessories regularly for wear.
