Resistance cables and resistance knobs

A resistance cable lets you mechanically adjust the training resistance of an exercise bike, cross trainer, rowing machine or other fitness equipment. Here you can find replacement resistance cables, resistance knobs and resistance levers for a range of brands and models. Check the machine model, cable length and connections before ordering.

What does a resistance cable do?

A resistance cable connects the knob or lever on the fitness machine to the mechanism that controls training resistance. When you change the setting, the inner cable moves a magnet unit or another mechanical resistance component, for example. This makes pedalling or moving easier or harder.

Resistance cable, knob or lever

Depending on the machine, the control consists of a separate cable, a resistance knob with an integrated cable or a complete resistance lever. Some machines also use upper and lower resistance cables connected to each other. Check which part of the system needs replacing.

When should you replace a resistance cable?

Replacement may be needed if the cable is broken, kinked, stretched or seized. Other signs include a knob that turns without a noticeable effect, a lever that does not reach every position or resistance that can no longer be increased or reduced. Also check whether the cable has simply come loose before ordering a new component.

Is a resistance cable the same as a steel cable?

No. A resistance cable is a control cable used to adjust the training load. A multi-gym’s steel cable instead transfers force between a handle, training arm and weight stack. Electrical wiring and cables for electronically controlled resistance are also different components.

Are resistance cables universal?

Most resistance cables are made for a specific machine or product range. The lengths of the inner cable and outer housing, end fittings, mounting and adjustment range must all match. A cable that looks identical may therefore not fit correctly or provide sufficient travel.

How do you find the right resistance cable?

Identify the brand and full model designation of the fitness machine. Also compare the part number, length, cable end fittings and mounting points with the existing cable. For a two-part system, check whether you need the upper cable, lower cable or complete assembly.

Resistance cable or resistance motor?

Fitness machines with a manually adjustable dial or lever often use a mechanical resistance cable. With electronically controlled resistance, the setting is generally controlled by a motor and the console. Check which system your machine uses first.

Installing and adjusting a resistance cable

Before dismantling anything, record how the existing cable runs through the frame and its connection position. Fit the new cable without sharp bends or kinks and adjust the travel so that both the lowest and highest resistance settings are reachable. Test every setting gently before fully loading the machine again.
