What are Olympic weight plates?

Olympic weight plates use a 50 mm centre hole. Slide them onto the loading sleeves of a compatible barbell and secure them with suitable collars. Here, Olympic refers primarily to the 50 mm system; it does not automatically mean competition approval or suitability for dropping.

Will these plates fit my barbell?

These plates are intended for compatible Olympic barbells with 50 mm loading sleeves. If unsure, measure the section that holds the plates, not the shaft you grip. Use collars suitable for 50 mm barbell sleeves.

What is the difference between 30 and 50 mm plates?

Olympic weight plates have 50 mm holes, while our standard weight plates have 30 mm holes. A 30 mm plate cannot fit a 50 mm sleeve. Do not use an Olympic plate with a 50 mm hole loose on a 30 mm bar: the opening is too large for a proper fit.

Iron or rubber-coated Olympic plates?

Iron plates are often compact, which can help when loading length is limited. Rubber-coated plates have an outer layer that can reduce contact noise and direct metal contact with the floor. Compare actual thickness and construction. A rubber coating does not automatically make a plate suitable for dropping.

What are tri-grip weight plates?

Tri-grip plates have three grip openings that make them easier to pick up, carry and load onto a bar. Some exercises can also be performed with a single plate, provided its design permits a secure grip and you can control the weight throughout the movement.

When should you choose fractional plates?

Microplates or fractional plates let you increase the load in smaller increments than regular plates. They are useful when a larger increase is too demanding, for example during presses or gradual strength progression. Check that these smaller plates also have a 50 mm hole diameter.

Olympic plates or bumper plates?

Bumper plates are Olympic plates with 50 mm holes, made largely from rubber and commonly designed for dynamic lifts. Permission to drop them depends on the specific plate and the training surface. For weightlifting and lifts involving a controlled release, explore our Olympic bumper plates with 50 mm holes and check their stated use.

Which weights do you need?

A practical set combines larger plates for building the total load with smaller plates for precise increases. Load both sides of a barbell evenly and include the bar’s own weight in your calculations. Check the bar, bench and rack limits separately; a bench’s total load rating may also include the user’s weight.

Training with Olympic weights

Use Olympic plates with 50 mm holes on a compatible Olympic barbell with 50 mm loading sleeves and secure them with suitable collars. Check even loading before each set. Only drop a loaded bar when the plates, barbell and floor are explicitly suitable for that use.

Storing Olympic weight plates

Keep loose plates out of walkways and avoid leaving them leaning unsecured against a wall. A suitable weight plate storage rack keeps your training space organised. Check that its pegs accept plates with 50 mm holes and that its load capacity suits your collection.
